Meteorology Meets Medicine: Mapping Skin Health Risks — Interdisciplinary Research Project on Sensitive Skin Health Management Amid Climate Change Launched

On July 14, a launch event for an interdisciplinary research project on sensitive skin health management amid climate change was held at the Shanghai Meteorological Museum. The event was jointly hosted by the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Meteorology and Health and the Institute of Dermatology, Fudan University, organized by the Shanghai Fengxian District Meteorological Bureau and the Shanghai Health Aesthetics Science Communication and Innovation Center, with public welfare support from CHANDO Group. Experts and scholars from the fields of meteorology, medicine and related industries, together with corporate representatives, gathered to witness the official launch of an innovative model of interdisciplinary collaboration between meteorology and dermatology.

Launch Ceremony of the Interdisciplinary Research Project on Sensitive Skin Health Management Amid Climate Change


As global climate change continues, the impact of weather and climate fluctuations, atmospheric environmental changes and other factors on skin health has become increasingly evident. Health concerns related to sensitive skin are becoming more prevalent, while public demand for targeted skin health protection continues to grow. These challenges form the key impetus behind the launch of this interdisciplinary research project.

This collaboration will bring together expertise from meteorological science, dermatology and industry, breaking down data silos and enabling cross-disciplinary data sharing and joint analysis based on the long-term meteorological observation data and extensive clinical outpatient data accumulated by the participating institutions. Grounded in scientific evidence, the project team will investigate how meteorological and environmental conditions affect skin health and, on this basis, develop a more practical skin health “risk map.” The initiative aims to provide the public with science-based guidance for disease prevention and daily skincare management that is better adapted to changing climatic conditions.

Peng Li, Academic Leader of the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Meteorology and Health, presented a systematic overview of how meteorological and atmospheric environmental factors — including temperature, relative humidity, ultraviolet radiation, pollen and particulate matter — affect skin health, drawing on long-term observational data from Shanghai. From a skin health perspective, she analyzed the risks of various weather-related factors in triggering skin conditions such as dermatitis, photodamage and allergic reactions, and offered targeted recommendations for health protection.

Professor Xiang Leihong, Chief Physician and Doctoral Supervisor in the Department of Dermatology at Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, and Executive Deputy Director of the Institute of Dermatology, Fudan University, provided an in-depth interpretation of the core framework of the “Interdisciplinary Research on Sensitive Skin Health Management Amid Climate Change.” Her presentation offered preliminary insights into the mechanisms through which environmental factors — including temperature, humidity, sunlight exposure, seasonal transitions, PM2.5 and PM10 — affect highly sensitive skin conditions, opening up new research directions for precision skincare and disease prevention.
