Meteorology Meets Medicine to Map Skin Health Risks: Interdisciplinary Research Project on Sensitive Skin Management Under Climate Change Officially Launched

On July 14, the launch meeting for an interdisciplinary research project on Sensitive Skin Health Management Under Climate Change was held at the Shanghai Meteorological Museum. The event was jointly organized by the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Meteorology and Health and the Institute of Dermatology, Fudan University; hosted by the Fengxian District Meteorological Bureau of Shanghai and the Shanghai Health Aesthetics Science Popularization & Innovation Center; and supported as a public welfare initiative by CHANDO Group. Experts and representatives from the fields of meteorology, medicine, industry, and academia gathered to witness the official launch of a new cross-disciplinary collaboration integrating meteorological science and dermatological research.

As global climate change continues to intensify, fluctuations in weather patterns and changes in the atmospheric environment are having an increasingly significant impact on skin health. Sensitive skin-related conditions have become more prevalent, while public demand for targeted skin health protection continues to grow. Addressing this challenge serves as the primary motivation behind the launch of this interdisciplinary research initiative. The collaboration brings together expertise in meteorological science, dermatology, and industry to break down data barriers and enable cross-disciplinary integration. Leveraging long-term meteorological observation records alongside extensive clinical outpatient data, the project will conduct joint data analysis across multiple fields.Based on scientific evidence, the research team will investigate how meteorological and environmental factors influence skin health and develop a practical Skin Health Risk Map, providing the public with more climate-responsive scientific guidance for disease prevention and daily skincare management.

Peng Li, Academic Leader of the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Meteorology and Health, presented a systematic overview of how meteorological and atmospheric environmental factors—including temperature, relative humidity, ultraviolet radiation, pollen, and particulate matter—affect skin health, drawing upon long-term observational data collected in Shanghai. She analyzed the risks associated with various weather conditions in triggering dermatitis, photoaging, allergic reactions, and other skin disorders, while also providing targeted recommendations for skin health protection.

Professor Xiang Leihong, Chief Dermatologist at Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, Doctoral Supervisor, and Executive Deputy Director of the Institute of Dermatology, Fudan University, provided an in-depth interpretation of the project's core research framework. Her presentation offered preliminary insights into how environmental factors—including temperature, humidity, sunlight exposure, seasonal transitions, PM2.5, and PM10—affect highly sensitive skin conditions, opening new research directions for precision skincare and disease prevention.

Representing the industry, Dr. Chen Juanling, General Manager of Public Affairs at CHANDO Group, noted that collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutions plays a vital role in translating scientific achievements into public benefits, cultivating talent aligned with industry needs, and fostering mutually beneficial development across all sectors. Moving forward, the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Meteorology and Health and the Institute of Dermatology, Fudan University will deepen their collaboration by carrying out long-term joint research on key scientific questions at the intersection of meteorology and skin health. Through a cross-sector and interdisciplinary innovation mechanism, both parties will continue advancing the development and application of health-oriented meteorological service products, enriching urban health meteorology services, supporting the development of a healthier and more beautiful Shanghai, and providing the public with more professional, refined, and practical approaches to skin health management.
