CHANDO Group 2024 Sustainability Report

At the outset, the Report clearly states: “At CHANDO Group, we view sustainable development through the integrated perspectives of environmental, social and corporate governance considerations. We prioritize the sustainable development of the company itself to ensure that the endeavors of our employees, partners and stakeholders are not short-lived, but built to endure.” In the foreword, Zheng Chunying, Chairman of CHANDO Group, emphasizes: “Since its founding in 2001, CHANDO Group has established a strong industry reputation built on four pillars: integrity and responsibility, reliable quality, robust capabilities and technological leadership. These are among our most important corporate brand assets, giving us the confidence to uphold our mission and vision and lead the way toward future growth.”

Highlights of CHANDO Group’s 2024 Sustainability Achievements

Drawing on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), CHANDO Group officially launched its 2030 Sustainability Strategy in early 2024, establishing two strategic drivers: “Addressing Climate Change and Ecological Challenges while Fulfilling Corporate Responsibility” and “Leading Green Consumption and Delivering Green Value to Consumers.” Across the three dimensions of environmental, social and governance performance, the Group further established 12 specific strategic objectives, including addressing climate change and protecting biodiversity, advancing green packaging and the circular economy, and strengthening philanthropy and community impact. Together, these objectives support the sustainable advancement of the Group’s 3.0 Strategy, centered on beauty across four strategic priorities — single-category focus, a multi-brand portfolio, an omnichannel and multi-format presence, and internationalization — as the Group continues to “Grow Through Beauty.”

CHANDO Group 2030 Sustainability Strategy

Building Green Beauty, Protecting Beauty and Nature

In response to climate change, an issue of shared global concern, the opening chapter of the Report identifies “Addressing Climate Change and Protecting Biodiversity” as one of the foremost and core objectives of CHANDO Group’s 2030 Sustainability Strategy. In 2024, the Group formulated and released the CHANDO Group Climate Change Management Policy, systematically identifying and addressing climate-related risks and opportunities. By proactively aligning with international standards, the Group is committed to contributing to global climate governance through green innovation.

At the same time, CHANDO Group regards biodiversity conservation as a key action in advancing this objective, with a particular focus on protecting the rich ecosystems and biological resources of the Himalayas, where the CHANDO brand draws its inspiration. For example, the Group has launched an ecological cultivation demonstration project for the artificial domestication of wild Himalayan plants, cultivating distinctive species such as Gentiana veitchiorum at the Himalaya Public Welfare Botanical Garden and applying successfully cultivated plants to scientific research and cosmetic ingredients. This initiative not only provides an effective alternative to harvesting protected wild plants and reduces disturbance to local ecosystems, but also fosters emerging industries within local communities, improves land productivity and increases farmers’ incomes.

Looking ahead, in line with the commitment to “Addressing Climate Change and Protecting Biodiversity” under its 2030 Sustainability Strategy, CHANDO Group plans to promote environmental, social and corporate development in the Himalayan region from 2025 to 2030 through biodiversity conservation, the sustainable use of biological resources and benefit-sharing, bringing the Himalayas’ rare natural gifts and beauty to consumers around the world.

On September 30, 2020, President Xi Jinping stated at the United Nations Summit on Biodiversity: “We need to find development opportunities in preserving nature, and achieve win-win outcomes in both ecological conservation and high-quality economic development.” This vision has also been put into practice through CHANDO’s “Planting Grass in the Himalayas” public welfare initiative.

In 2016, CHANDO partnered with the China Environmental Protection Foundation to establish the CHANDO Himalayan Environmental Protection Public Welfare Fund, dedicated to protecting Himalayan glaciers, rare flora and fauna, and unique local cultures, while showcasing the beauty and vibrant biodiversity of the Himalayas to the world through a variety of initiatives. To date, CHANDO Group has donated a cumulative RMB 28 million to the China Environmental Protection Foundation. As of 2024, the “Planting Grass in the Himalayas” public welfare initiative had been carried out for eight consecutive years, planting a cumulative 6.66 million square meters of highland barley grass in the Shigatse region of Xizang.

Advancing Green Technologies and Ingredients to Build a Foundation for Sustainable Beauty

CHANDO Group recognizes that truly green beauty is not simply about incorporating natural ingredients, but about harnessing the potential of natural resources through cutting-edge technology to achieve an optimal balance among efficacy, safety and environmental responsibility. Guided by the philosophy of “Powered by Nature, Perfected by Technology,” CHANDO is committed to deeply integrating nature and technology and embedding this approach to green technology throughout its research platforms, ingredient technologies, efficacy validation, safety technologies and other areas.

Guided by its overarching R&D strategy of “Independent Research with Global Collaboration,” the Group’s R&D Center has established six major scientific research platforms incorporating its “Five Senses and Six Perceptions” philosophy, with the goal of providing consumers with world-class products and services. Green R&D principles are embedded throughout the entire product life cycle. From ingredient selection and formulation design to manufacturing processes and packaging innovation, every stage strictly follows sustainable development principles. In the field of green ingredients, CHANDO Group has established an ingredient screening and development platform supported by five major green ingredient technologies: microbial fermentation technology, plant tissue culture technology, living-flower scent capture and molecular replication technology, ultra-low-temperature freeze-drying technology for botanical extracts, and natural color technology.

Ingredient science is a core technology of the cosmetics industry. CHANDO Group has independently developed a range of key cosmetic ingredients, building a technological competitive advantage for China’s domestic beauty industry. The Group screens unique microorganisms from Himalayan plants, glacial water and other environmental sources to research and develop proprietary fermented ingredients with proven skincare benefits. For example, HiMurchaSin® is a patented ingredient developed through fifth-generation intelligent fermentation technology. Its raw materials are naturally sourced, while the fermentation process is mild and highly efficient, increasing the extraction yield of active ingredients by 300%. At the same time, energy consumption during the production process is reduced by 25%, with 100% of raw materials converted into the final product. In addition to achieving a high yield, the process enables zero discharge through biological recycling and degradation.

When selecting ingredients, CHANDO Group prioritizes renewable resources to minimize environmental impact. For example, the Group has pioneered the application of “Living-Flower Scent Capture and Molecular Replication Technology.” Without damaging the plants or their surrounding ecosystems, specialized equipment is used to capture and analyze the natural fragrances of flowers growing at high altitudes, after which molecular replication technology is applied to recreate and enhance their scents. To date, the technology has successfully captured and been applied to more than ten natural fragrances, which are widely used across CHANDO’s skincare, personal care and color cosmetics product lines.

CHANDO Group has also developed and applied plant tissue culture ingredient technology. Through modern plant tissue culture techniques, plant cell tissues can be rapidly cultivated at scale, allowing active components to be screened and developed into plant tissue culture-derived ingredients with effective skincare benefits for use in product development. One example is CHANDO’s Pink Diamond Space Rose Cream, whose key ingredient, “Space Rose Extract,” originates from a rare rose seed resource bank in the Pan-Himalayan region at an altitude of 3,300 meters. From more than 30,000 varieties, the research team selected a rare Chinese native species from Shangri-La and collected more than 3,000 seeds. Through space microgravity breeding and plant cell tissue culture, the team enriched the concentration and diversity of highly effective skincare components designed to target signs of aging at the skin’s foundational level.

Green Packaging and the Circular Economy: Reshaping a Low-Carbon Industry Value Chain

Across its operations, advancing green packaging and the circular economy represents another major highlight of the environmental section of the Report. CHANDO Group actively develops environmentally responsible packaging, streamlines packaging design, optimizes manufacturing processes through standardization and scale, and promotes product refills to further reduce plastic consumption. In the context of China’s national “Dual Carbon” goals, the Group remains committed to transitioning toward green development and demonstrating the green and low-carbon philosophy of Chinese cosmetics brands.

In the field of green packaging, CHANDO Group’s R&D Center completed more than 100 projects related to plastic reduction and emissions reduction in 2024, reflecting the Group’s long-term commitment to and achievements in sustainable packaging. For example, the bottle of CHANDO’s Hydrating Toner uses the world’s first one-step gradient blow-molding technology. Developed over seven years, the product has sold more than 110 million bottles over 16 years, reducing carbon emissions by more than 90% while eliminating the use of paint; packaging cartons for products from CHANDO Group’s infant and children’s dermatological efficacy skincare brand imine use paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), with strict controls throughout the production process to reduce impacts on forests; CHANDO Group has also designed refill cartridges for full-size products including cushion foundations, Golden Diamond Cream and personal care products. While maintaining functionality and enabling consumers to replace refills conveniently, these designs significantly reduce packaging material use, resource consumption and packaging waste at the source, thereby lowering carbon emissions. For CHANDO’s cushion foundation, one full-size product paired with one refill reduces packaging weight by 36%, with a carbon reduction of 0.12 kgCO2e per product.

In the area of the circular economy, CHANDO officially launched its “Empty Bottle Recycling Program” in 2023, encouraging consumers to return empty product containers and giving discarded packaging a second life through recycled-art initiatives, thereby creating an end-to-end green recycling system that supports a low-carbon circular economy. Over the following two years, more than 10,000 consumers participated in the program.

By proactively aligning with international standards, the Group is committed to contributing to global climate governance through green innovation. In the same year, CHANDO Group’s Environmental Management System achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification, marking its formal alignment with international environmental management standards and underscoring the Group’s firm commitment to environmental protection.

Giving Back to Communities and Sharing Benefits to Build a Diverse Network of Responsibility

CHANDO Group’s approach to sustainable development is rooted in the integrated consideration of environmental, social and governance factors. At its core is a commitment to benefiting people and giving back to society while ensuring the healthy and sustainable development of the business. Accordingly, on the social front, CHANDO Group continues to strengthen its strategic focus on philanthropy and community impact. Through public welfare initiatives, the Group is actively building a multidimensional network of responsibility spanning educational equity, cultural heritage and regional economic development.

In active response to the “Women’s Action for Rural Revitalization” and “Youth Talent Development Initiative,” CHANDO Group partnered with the China Children and Teenagers’ Fund in 2023 to launch the “CHANDO Spring Bud Education Support Initiative.” Focusing on the development and empowerment of girls and young women, the initiative is committed to ensuring that every girl has access to equitable, high-quality education. To date, CHANDO Group has donated a cumulative RMB 5.6 million through the initiative, supporting 860 female students in Xizang.

Beyond financial support, CHANDO Group empowers female students through a diverse range of initiatives, including career planning seminars, scientific and technological literacy training, and social practice programs in Shanghai. These initiatives help strengthen their overall capabilities while cultivating the power of women and girls as a driving force for rural revitalization and sustainable development.

Putting ESG into Practice: CHANDO’s Approach to Sustainable Development

“Fulfilling our social responsibility is not only our original aspiration, but also a commitment we will uphold for the long term,” emphasized Zheng Chunying, Chairman and President of CHANDO Group. For CHANDO, corporate social responsibility is far more than an act of philanthropy that simply adds value to the business; it is an essential responsibility at the heart of the brand and a long-term strategic commitment. Zheng believes that companies pursuing long-term development must assume the fundamental responsibility of advancing social progress, preserving cultural heritage and protecting the environment. This is not merely an obligation, but an integral part of responsible business.

When 6.66 million square meters of gravel-covered land are transformed into fertile ground through the planting of highland barley grass, and when girls supported by the Spring Bud initiative journey from the plateau to R&D laboratories — these tangible outcomes embody CHANDO’s core belief: sustainable development is not a cost, but a choice to create long-term value.

With more than 300 data points, the CHANDO Group 2024 Sustainability Report establishes a benchmark for corporate responsibility in the beauty industry, demonstrating that ecological and economic benefits can coexist and reinforce one another. It offers the global beauty industry a measurable, verifiable and replicable pathway toward sustainable development.
